Silent your mind for reflection

Sometimes it is good to silent your mind to luxuriously reflect your doings/thoughts, compiling the achievements, the experiences, the knowledge gained, the amazing feelings, the changes done, the liking, the hating, the dreams, etc. :)

Fact】瘾。Addiction

A TED talk shared on 9-Jul-2015 by Johann Hari about addiction. There were studies conducted that suggested that addiction is caused by loneliness and the cure to loneliness is connection.

In a lab test, a rat is caged with two liquid supplies, one being the water and the other being the heroin-contained water. As expected, the rat is obsessed with the heroin-contained water and keeps coming back for more and more until it kills itself.

In 1970s, a psychology professor Kraus Alexander noticed something odd about this experience. He realized the rat was alone in the cage. So, he built a rat park which is heaven for rats. In the park, there are drugged water and normal water. However, those rats hardly consume the drugged water. Alexander's theory was helpfully experimented by the Vietnam war. In the war, 20% of American soldiers consumed a lot of heroin. However, 95% just stopped after they got home.

In Johann's TED talk, he shared that Portugal in 2001 had decriminalized all the drugs and began spending money to get drug addicts reconnect back to society through releasing them from prisons, finding them a job by paying half of their wages and therefore finding them a purpose of life. From 15 years of observation, the drug addiction cases had been reduced by 50%. What an achievement! his fact was also shared in Medical Daily on 21st-April-2016.

Interesting fact about addiction. Human is born with the need of connection. By enhancing the connection with people, addiction towards inhuman things will be removed. Will this discovery be used worldwide to help reduce the addictions towards inhuman things and helps with social recovery?

【人。People】Christine Ong & Avery Tan

Last week, on my way up to Gemzflo Studio, I met a lady. To my surprise she is the owner of Sui Naturally Beautiful herself. She invited me to have a drink at her office and had a chit-chat. The chit-chat was unconsciously went on for 2hours, until even her co-founder also joined us after she reached the office.

We talked about woman's role both in a family and in the society. Also, she shared a lot of her experience growing up in business-running family which forms who she is today. Her principle over the details of a products, of a design, of everything that leads to optimum quality.

Her sharing was attractive until I lost focus because of her beautiful face. I said to her that her make-up was simple and just-nice. Another surprise from her, "These are not make-up." She further clarified that she just made some "tattooing" on both the eyebrow and eyeliner, which was known to me later "embroidery" technique/technology, and also eye lash extension. Her lips was naturally pinkish. :o

"Tattooing" to make a permanent beautiful eyebrow and eyeliner, the idea is cool when I hear it. Who created this? What's more attracting to me is that with those simple touch-up, you can basically stay beautiful all the time as if you have done the make-up. You can shower with it, you can sleep with it, but just have to maintain it once it awhile. How time-saving it is! Definitely brilliant! :D She just look gorgeous without any make-up.

And, yes, they have these services here in Sui Naturally Beautiful. With her as example and also her principle on the quality details, I highly believe their service will be remarkable and the outcome of the service will be satisfying.

Nice to meet you both, Ong Tee Ling and Avery Tan. Let's have another chit-chat some time.

She knows what she likes and decide to be her own boss as a beauty therapist, having her own beauty center at Puchong Teddy's Beauty and running everywhere providing on-site service. Another toast for her courage in pursuing her dream.

A nice courageous person. :) Nice to have her as a friend.

Wealth and Choices

Long time ago, I thought about these questions. Is money really a necessary to a human in a human world? Is it not possible to do the things you like to do without the money?

After a long observation, I realized number of choices is directly proportionate with wealth. Greater wealth comes greater choices and wise-versa.

Later, I realize if I can choose to do what I like to do, it is very fortune for me. Hence, I need to appreciate it and not take it for granted.

Richer people can choose to eat the food in the rubbish bin, but poorest people in the world cannot choose to eat the food presented on the table of the high-class restaurant.

For most of the time, poor is not even a choice for the poor.

Pity or fortune?

When you feel you are pity, broaden your thought, jump out of your comfortable small world, think about those whose lives are much more worse than you, and you will realize that your live is actually not bad at all~! Be awaken~!

Think】价格。价值 Price。Value

What's important is not the price, but the value.

Samsara

This picture was captured when I was on my way back to KLIA2 airport from Japan Kansai airport in a airplane. It was a time filled with heavy feeling thinking of my love one who was in serious illness. It was unsure if she could fight the sickness and survived. The death seemed so close.

I looked at the cloud and thought of samsara. Cloud is formed by evaporated water from the earth. Water from the earth is formed by the rain dropping on the earth. The rain is formed by the condensed water from the cloud. And cloud is formed by... So, it forms a circle. From where I work, people would use the term 'circularity'.

If each cloud represents a person, there would be my sister and all of us among these clouds. I thought to myself if my sister was to fall and leave us, where would she be going and would she be joining us back as the same old her?

When she fell, she would become plenty of droplets and then landed at multiple places. It could be sea, mountain, house swimming pool, crops, open lands, etc. She would be everywhere. Each droplet of her might be evaporated together with other droplet from other cloud, rose up to the sky and formed a new cloud. This new cloud wouldn't be the whole her but the whole cloud would have some of her.

She would be ended up everywhere and it might took years before she was one piece again. Till then, I might be separated into many clouds also too and wouldn't be whole me for some times. It could really take many many years, might be centuries before we were together again.

However, she was not a cloud but a human. If she was to forever to sleep beneath the earth surface, she would slowly become part of the earth and would most likely be providing nutrients to the earth to grow plants. She would be in many plants. Those plants might slowly be the food to human and she would ends up in human bodies. She would be nutrients to grow babies in mommys. She would end up be part of many human and she would be whole her again after many cycles.

If there is samsara, I guess that's what it is.

Barber's Shop

I was visiting a residential flat in Padang Tembak. I parked my car by the roadside as what the residents would do. Out of my car and walked into the market which was just surrounding the 16th-floor elevator-equipped flat. The flat is comprised of few buildings, I lost count as there are many of them.

My first feeling was how convenient it is to stay there. Whenever you need food or anything, you could just take the elevator to ground floor and you would find what you need out of the elevator. How convenient! You seldom get this convenience in modern properties including flat and condo.

Second feeling was that the neighborhood bonding is quite strong here.  I bet all the stall owners are from this flat or this area, opening stall to earn some living. Walking pass the market, I could see few old folks sitting here and there having tea and chit-chatting together. How relax.

This barber's shop is one of the hang-around place for these uncles. It was a corner commercial lot of the flat located under a big tree. When I passed by this barber's shop, I couldn't help it but took a picture of it. There are the heritage barber's shop chairs and heritage barber's shop design with simple big mirror. Yeah, these are the necessaries and so not as special.

So, what are so special that it caught my eyes? Do you realize this is a open-concept barber shop? Two sides of the shop are wide-opened which allow natural cool wind to blow in especially when it is shedded under a big tree. The wind acts as the "air-cond" for this barber's shop. I bet no customer would ever complain about how hot they are sitting in there. Second, do you see there is a set of home sofa in the shop? It feels very homey for me, it feels like a living room. The feeling is stronger when there were uncles sitting there chit-chatting.

This flat and this barber's shop definitely is a heritage to Penang Island. I hope this place could continue to exist and maybe has its surrounding improved/repaired/beautified enough to be sustained as a heritage location. Really love this barber's shop!
